RI elevates alert status, plans evacuation of citizens amid rising Iran-Israel conflict
Indonesia has raised the alert status at its embassy in Tehran to the highest level and is preparing for possible evacuation of over 380 citizens residing in Iran, following intensifying Israeli military strikes in the region.
The decision was announced by Foreign Minister Sugiono during a late-night press briefing on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 in St. Petersburg, where he is accompanying President Prabowo Subianto on a State visit to Russia.
"Given the increasingly unsafe and deteriorating situation, especially the recent escalation in attacks targeting not only military but also civilian areas, I have decided to raise our embassy’s readiness level from Alert 2 to Alert 1," Sugiono said. "We have begun implementing contingency plans and evacuation measures for Indonesian citizens."
Indonesia is coordinating closely with neighboring countries to secure safe land routes for evacuation, as aerial routes are deemed nonviable.
"The only viable option now is by land. I have communicated with several neighboring countries, asking them to facilitate border crossings when the time for evacuation arrives," he added.
In response to the broader geopolitical crisis, Sugiono confirmed that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will convene an emergency foreign ministers’ meeting in Istanbul on June 21 to discuss the Iran–Israel conflict.
When asked about Indonesia’s stance on the ongoing hostilities and the recent G7 statements on Iran’s nuclear capabilities, Sugiono emphasized Indonesia’s consistent advocacy for peace.
“Indonesia absolutely does not condone this situation. Any attack only worsens it. Once a war starts, we don’t know when or how it will end. Civilians are the ones who suffer − and they have a right to life and safety,” he said.
He reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to global peace, stating: “We hope wisdom will prevail and de-escalation efforts can begin. Indonesia remains ready to contribute in any way possible to the creation of global peace.”
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is maintaining continuous communication with its nationals in Iran and urges them to stay closely coordinated with the embassy for further instructions.
