PT PAL unveils autonomous submarine, CMS at Indo Defence 2025
State-owned shipbuilder PT PAL Indonesia has showcased its latest advancements in maritime defense at the Indo Defence 2024 Expo & Forum, unveiling an autonomous submarine and a Combat Management System (CMS) for warships as part of its push to bolster Indonesia’s naval capabilities.
“These are PT PAL’s latest contributions to strengthening Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities,” Wiyono Komodjojo, Marketing Director at PT PAL, told a press conference in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
Developed independently with a local content (TKDN) exceeding 50 percent, the autonomous submarine is designed to operate without continuous logistical support, offering a cost-effective and unmanned solution for underwater defense missions.
“This innovation responds to strategic operational needs by minimizing reliance on extended supply chains and personnel deployment,” Wiyono cited.
Meanwhile, the CMS is intended to integrate weapons, sensors, and communications systems aboard naval vessels. The system marks PT PAL’s initiative to strengthen Indonesia’s defense ecosystem and reduce dependency on foreign technologies.
“This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to build self-reliance within the national defense industry,” Wiyono said.
In addition to its new technologies, PT PAL also exhibited its flagship defense vessels at the event, including the Fregate Merah Putih, Landing Platform Dock (LPD), Multirole Support Ship (MRSS), Hospital Assistance Ship (BRS), and the Scorpène-class submarine.
Also present at the exhibition was DEFEND ID, the state-owned defense industry holding company under which PT PAL operates. DEFEND ID’s President Director Joga Dharma Setiawan emphasized the group's long-term vision.
“We carry a unified vision to bring Indonesia into the ranks of the world's top 50 defense industries,” Joga told reporters on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
“Indo Defence 2025 Expo & Forum is a vital platform to expand our international cooperation network and reinforce our presence in the domestic market,” he said.
DEFEND ID’s participation also targets exploration of domestic market opportunities, particularly in addressing the Indonesian Military (TNI) modernization needs and supporting the development of a defense industry based on a national supply chain.
