Indonesia has strongly condemned the shooting by Israeli forces at a group of European, American, Asian and African diplomats on an official tour in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

The incident, which did not result in casualties, has sparked international outrage and further highlighted ongoing concerns over Israel’s treatment of civilians and foreign personnel in Palestinian territories.

In an official statement via its X (formerly Twitter) account, Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (@Kemlu_RI) said the attack is "yet another unacceptable display of complete disregard for international law by Israel − an injustice Palestinians endure daily in their homeland."

The ministry further asserted that such disregard for international law is a product of years of impunity enjoyed by Israel.

“We call on the international community to increase pressure on Israel to halt its hostilities and end its illegal occupation,” the ministry said in its X official account on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The shooting took place in Jenin, a city in the northern West Bank that has frequently been the site of Israeli military operations. In recent years, Jenin has seen intensified raids by Israeli forces, often resulting in civilian casualties and property destruction. These actions are widely condemned by human rights groups and several UN agencies.

Tensions in the region have escalated since the start of 2024, following a wave of Israeli settler expansion, increased clashes in refugee camps, and repeated Israeli air and ground operations in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Despite numerous calls for restraint, the Israeli government has continued its military campaigns, citing security threats from militant groups.

Middle East affairs analyst Faisal Assegaf emphasized the broader implications of the attack. “The incident once again demonstrates Israel’s ability to act without accountability − including threatening the safety of diplomats,” he said.

Assegaf suggested that the shooting may have been intended to divert attention from Israeli military actions in Jenin, where reports of alleged human rights abuses against Palestinian civilians have surfaced in recent weeks.

However, Assegaf noted that the incident is unlikely to seriously affect Israel’s relations with European countries.

“At most, Europe will issue condemnations,” he remarked, reflecting what he described as a pattern of rhetorical responses with limited diplomatic consequences.

The Indonesian government reiterated its support for Palestinian self-determination and a two-state solution. It called on the international community − particularly the United Nations and major powers − to take more decisive action in ensuring the protection of civilians and international personnel in Palestinian territories.

The incident adds to a long list of tensions between Indonesia and Israel, as Indonesia remains one of the most vocal supporters of the Palestinian cause in the Global South.
