The government has confirmed that Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) will proceed with the production of electric vehicle (EV) battery in Indonesia starting March 2026, said Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot Tanjung.

Yuliot cited that CATL has secured an off-taker for its battery products and is preparing to commence operations as part of Indonesia’s growing EV battery ecosystem.

“They are expected to begin production by March 2026 at the latest,” he said on Friday, May 16, 2025.

He said further that the investment will be executed in two phases due to regulatory requirements from the Chinese government.

“Out of the planned 15 GWh capacity, 7.5 GWh has secured approval so far,” he said, while noting that the remaining capacity will follow as CATL completes regulatory and funding processes.

Besides government approval, CATL is also securing financing through an initial public offering (IPO), which is expected to support the full 15 GWh production target. Yuliot emphasized that the project’s timeline and scale remain on track as initially planned.

CATL’s project is a cornerstone in Indonesia’s ambition to become a major player in the global EV supply chain. The government sees this as part of a broader push to develop domestic battery and EV production, utilizing the country’s vast nickel reserves.

Despite concerns over foreign investment slowdown, Yuliot asserted that the CATL investment is proceeding as planned and reflects strong investor confidence in Indonesia’s EV roadmap.
