Global digital infrastructure leader Equinix has launched the construction of its first data center in Indonesia, named JK1, located in the heart of Jakarta. 

The project is being developed in collaboration with PT Astra International, with a total investment of US$74 million (Rp1.2 trillion).

“Our capital expenditure for this initial market is around US$38 million. The total investment for JK1 is approximately US$74 million,” Haris Izmee, President Director of Equinix Indonesia, told a press conference in South Jakarta on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

JK1 marks Equinix’s debut in Indonesia. The facility is built with sustainability at its core, utilizing innovative Cooling Array technology and liquid cooling systems to manage heat from high-performance computing workloads, including those related to artificial intelligence (AI).

Haris also emphasized Equinix’s commitment to clean energy, stating that the Jakarta data center is powered 100 percent by renewable energy through the use of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Globally, Equinix reached 96 percent renewable energy coverage in 2024 as part of its broader environmental sustainability goals.

Strategically positioned in Central Jakarta, the JK1 facility is designed to enable Indonesian businesses to seamlessly connect to Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) global network of over 260 data centers across 35 countries. In the Asia-Pacific region alone, Equinix operates around 60 data centers, including locations in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Explaining the company’s decision to enter the Indonesian market, Haris highlighted the nation’s growing digital potential.

“We are drawn by Indonesia’s internet penetration rate, which has reached nearly 80 percent − that’s about 200 million people,” he noted.

He further emphasized that establishing a local data center is part of Equinix’s broader mission to support Indonesia’s digital infrastructure development and contribute positively to its digital ecosystem.
