Banyuwangi Regency in East Java has been selected as the site for Indonesia’s largest land-based solar power plant (PLTS), set to have a capacity of 100 MegaWatts (MW). 

The project is a key part of Indonesia’s broader commitment to achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060 through the expansion of renewable energy sources.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani confirmed that she recently met with Aswindo, Vice President of Pre-Construction at PT PLN Indonesia Power, to discuss the development of the solar power facility.

"In principle, the regional administration is ready to fully support the PLTS project, especially since it is categorized as one of the National Strategic Projects (PSN)," Ipuk said in Banyuwangi on Friday, May 9, 2025.

She said further that the solar power plant will play a vital role in supporting electricity supply for both Java and Bali. Construction is expected to commence at the end of 2025 and is targeted for completion by 2026, when the plant is slated to begin operations and contribute to the national grid.

According to reports from Antara News, the project has already been included in Indonesia’s General Plan for Electricity Supply (RUPTL). The facility will be constructed on a 130-hectare plot owned by State-owned plantation firm PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) I Regional 5, located in Kalipuro District, Banyuwangi. The chosen location is noted for its high solar irradiation levels, making it ideal for large-scale solar energy production.

Once operational, the electricity generated by the Banyuwangi PLTS will be fed into the 150 kV Java-Bali transmission network, bolstering power availability across the two major islands.

This project marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s energy transition, reflecting both national and regional commitment to clean energy and sustainable infrastructure development.
