Six countries express interests in building nuclear power plants in Indonesia
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has reported growing international interests in supporting Indonesia’s nuclear energy ambitions.
Six countries across Asia, Europe, and North have expressed interests to participate in the development of nuclear power plants (PLTN) in Indonesia.
"There have been communications (on Nuclear Power Plant Development) with various countries, such as the U.S., Russia, Denmark, Canada, UK, China," Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of ESDM, said on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Eniya noted that these countries have initiated discussions with key Indonesian institutions, including state electricity company PLN, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the National Energy Council, and the ESDM Ministry itself.
She declined to specify which companies are involved in the talks, stating only that communications are ongoing. Indonesia’s nuclear energy development is currently in Phase 1 − the preparatory stage − following guidelines set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
According to the draft of the Government Regulation on National Energy Policy (RPP KEN) and the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN), Indonesia aims to have its first nuclear power plant connected to the grid by 2032 with an initial capacity of 250 megawatts (MW). That capacity is projected to grow to 7 gigawatts (GW) by 2040.
