PLN to conduct joint study on hydrogen development for maritime transportation
State power utility PT PLN has signed a collaboration agreement with the Ministry of Transportation, PT HDF Energy Indonesia, and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry to conduct a joint study on the use of green hydrogen for the maritime transportation sector.
The agreement was signed during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit held in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 15.
Hendri Ginting, Director of Shipping and Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation, welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing its contribution to achieving Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets.
“The Ministry of Transportation, as the initiator of the study to convert ships into hydrogen-battery hybrid vessels, is committed to supporting and promoting collaboration aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. These efforts play a significant role in accelerating the achievement of our NDC goals,” Hendri said in a statement on Monday, April 21, 2025.
PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, said the initiative is meant to support the decarbonization of Indonesia’s transportation sector, especially in maritime, aligning with President Prabowo’s Asta Cita vision of achieving energy self-sufficiency and reaching Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by or before 2060.
“This partnership represents a strategic move aligned with the President’s broader vision of national energy resilience based on domestic and sustainable resources. It also serves to reduce carbon emissions in maritime transportation through the utilization of clean domestic energy,” Darmawan said.
Hartanto Wibowo, PLN Director of Corporate Planning and Business Development, added that the joint study would focus on Eastern Indonesia, a region rich in renewable energy potential and home to strategic shipping routes managed by ASDP.
“PLN welcomes this global collaboration to enhance clean energy use from upstream to downstream, particularly in the energy and transportation sectors. Following our success in building Indonesia’s electric vehicle ecosystem, PLN is now also promoting hydrogen-based transportation as an alternative solution to decarbonize the sector, alongside battery-electric vehicles,” Hartanto said.
PLN has produced 203 tons of green hydrogen through 22 Green Hydrogen Plants (GHPs) located across the country.
Mathieu Geze, Director for Asia Pacific and President Director of PT HDF Energy Indonesia, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to decarbonizing Indonesia’s maritime transport sector through hydrogen fuel cell technology.
“We are committed to a Net Zero Emission future through this strategic collaboration. We aim to position Indonesia as a green hydrogen innovation leader in the Asia Pacific region. Our fuel cell technology marks a significant step forward in decarbonizing maritime transport in Indonesia, while also showcasing French innovation on the global stage,” Geze said.
