Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has emphasized that Indonesia remains committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, even though a number of countries that initiated the Paris Agreement were inconsistent in their commitment at the opening of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition 2025.
"Indonesia will always be part of those implementing that commitment (reducing emissions), but with great caution," Bahlil said on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
He cited that Indonesia's commitment is stated in the vision of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto regarding energy sovereignty.
Bahlil also assured foreign participants not to doubt Indonesia's commitment to carrying out an energy transition to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
"In fact, my suggestion is, sir, please ask the initiating countries of the Paris Agreement, to what extent is their commitment? Because Indonesia has been very consistent in implementing it," the ESDM minister said.
Bahlil’s statement was apparently referring to the U.S., one of the initiators of the Paris Agreement, which officially withdrew from the climate agreement.
Then, the U.S. under the administration of Donald J. Trump signed an executive order to promote the coal industry in the U.S.
