National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has emphasized that foreign journalists can still freely cover activities in Indonesia as long as they do not violate the existing laws.
He was responding to the circulating narrative regarding foreign journalists being required to have a Police Permit (SKK) if they want to cover news events in Indonesia.
"Without a SKK, foreign journalists can still carry out their duties in Indonesia as long as they do not violate the existing laws and regulations," the Police chief said on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
Listyo said that the Police also do not require foreign journalists to have the SKK. In addition, if the guarantor does not submit a Police Permit, the SKK will not be issued.
"So the news related to the word mandatory is not appropriate, because in the Perpol (Police Regulation) there is no such word of mandatory, but the SKK is issued based on the request of the guarantor," he said.
Even so, Listyo allows foreign journalists who want to still apply for Police permit. In addition, foreign journalists can also ask for protection when reporting in conflict-prone areas.
"If journalists are going to carry out activities in the Papua region which are prone to conflict, the guarantor can ask the Police for an SKK and also ask for protection because they are working in a conflict area," he said.
