ICCS Youth set up to raise awareness on CCS technogy among young generation
Indonesia officially has had a communication and information center meant as an arena to generate public awareness and acceptance on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology and develop the capacity of young generation to be engaged in the CCS industry.
The Indonesia Carbon Capture Storage (ICCS) Youth was launched in an event held at the University of Indonesia campus on March 6, 2025. As an organization born out of concern for environmental issues, Indonesia CCS Youth is determined to be part of the solution in Indonesia's efforts to achieve net zero emissions.
Chairman of ICCS Youth, Taqi Hammam Ariza, stressed that success in achieving this goal is not only the responsibility of an individual or a specific group, but requires collaboration from various stakeholders.
“We must have the courage to choose and push ourselves to keep moving forward. One day, when Indonesia achieves net zero emissions, we want to ensure that our contribution is part of it,” Taqi, who is also an analyst at the Indonesia CCS Center , said while addressing the launch of the ICCS Youth.
World's First CCS Student Chapter
ICCS Youth is apparently the world's first CCS student chapter, marking the active role of young generation in the development of CCS technology.
Executive Director of Indonesia CCS Center, Belladonna Troxylon Maulianda, emphasized that this initiative is a significant step in advancing technological solutions for achieving carbon neutrality.
“The establishment of this student chapter is concrete proof that if you have ideas and plans, do not hesitate to make them happen. Discuss them with people who can help, and, God willing, they will become a reality,” Belladonna said in her speech.
The Indonesia CCS Center was established in March 2023 as part of a side event at the 2023 ASEAN Summit. Today, the organization has 23 active members involved in various global and national agendas, including youth education and public awareness campaigns on CCS.
“We want to ensure that CCS is not only recognized as a technology-based solution but also becomes part of the national strategy to reduce carbon emissions,” Belladonna said.
CCS is a technology that enables the large-scale storage of carbon underground, differing from nature-based solutions such as tree planting or mangrove rehabilitation. This initiative has received support from various parties, including the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the Indonesian Association of Petroleum Engineers (IATMI), and multiple academic institutions.
Furthermore, several companies and organizations have also supported CCS development in Indonesia. ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, and Pertamina are among the companies actively involved in CCS research and implementation. Meanwhile, academic institutions such as the University of Indonesia, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and several other universities contribute to research and development of experts in this field.
“Support from various sectors, including industry, academia, and the government, is crucial to ensuring that CCS technology can develop and contribute to a sustainable energy transition,” Belladonna concluded.
