PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), a geothermal energy subsidiary of State energy company PT Pertamina is targeting three new geothermal power plants (PLTP) to operate in 2025 to 2027.
PGE Exploration and Development Director, Edwil Suzandi said the three geothermal power plant projects have a capacity of up to 395 Megawatts (MW). The projects involve the development of Lumut Balai Unit-2 Geothermal Power Plant in South Sumatra with a capacity of 55 MW, Hululais Units 1 and 2 with a capacity of 110 MW in Bengkulu and several co-generation projects with a capacity of 230 MW.
Previously, PGE secured funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) amounting to US$155 million (Rp2.40 trillion) for the development of the Lumut Balai Unit 2 Geothermal Power Plant in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra.
Through this development, the geothermal capacity in the Lumut Balai Area will increase by 55 MW, bringing the total geothermal capacity in the area to 110 MW.
For the Lumut Balai Unit 2 project, PGE is collaborating with three companies from Japan, China and Indonesia. The three companies are Mitsubishi Corporation, SEPCO III Electric Power Construction Co Ltd (SEPCO III) and PT Wijaya Karya.
"We have completed Lumut Balai construction so that the commercial operation date (COD) can be in June," Edwil said on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
He said that in order to be able to operate the Lumut Balai Unit 2 PLTP, PGN only needs to wait for the readiness of PLN which will absorb electricity from the PLTP.
Meanwhile, in the development of co-generation with a capacity of 230 MW, the company is currently processing the proposal of independent power producer (IPP). Furthermore, PGE will process the proposal of power purchase agreement (PPA) or electricity purchase agreement.
"We hope that by the end of this year or the end of next year we will be able to set the COD," he said.
Meanwhile, the construction of Hululais PLTP Units 1 and 2 are underway.
"If everything goes according to target, in 2027 we will be able to COD this Hululais Geothermal Power Plant," Edwil said.
