XL Axiata, Smartfren officially merge
Two telecommunication companies PT XL Axiata and PT Smartfren Telecom have officially merged following a recommendation made and ratified at the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGMS) and Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (EGMS) in Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
XL Axiata CEO, Vivek Sood, emphasized that this merger will strengthen digital innovation and improve customer experience throughout Indonesia.
"The power of the merger will drive digital innovation and customer experience throughout the country," Vivek told a press conference.
Smartfren President Director, Merza Fachys, said that this merger is a strategic step to strengthen the company's position in facing increasingly tight competition in the telecommunications industry.
"This decision will create a telecommunications operator that is stronger, bigger, and has more optimal resources," Merza noted, while citing that the merger is expected toaccelerate growth, increase competitiveness, and provide better services for customers.
In addition, the merger of XL Axiata and Smartfren infrastructure is expected to strengthen the network, increase internet speed, and expand service coverage to previously unreachable areas.
Smartfren also hopes that this merger can strengthen various initiatives in the social, environmental, and economic sectors. One of the main focuses after the merger is investment in the digitalization of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the development of innovative services for the wider community.
In the process, Smartfren will complete all administration and regulations in accordance with the provisions of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI), and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Application.
Merza targets that the entire merger process can be completed while still complying with applicable regulations, so that the business integration between XL Axiata and Smartfren can run smoothly without legal obstacles.
