The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Banjarnegara Regency Government are developing technology to process plastic waste into fuel (petasol) through a fast pyrolysis (faspol) machine.
"Processing plastic waste into petasol is an innovative solution to overcome the waste problem while providing alternative energy," Head of the Center for Research on Sustainable Production Systems and Life Cycle Assessment (PR SPBPDH) at BRIN, Nugroho Adi Sasongko, said on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, Coordinator of the Resource Valorization Research Group in Sustainable Circular Engineering, Tri Martini Patria, cited that processing plastic waste into fuel has interesting economic potential.
"Processing plastic waste into petasol with the principle of a circular economy not only reduces the volume of waste, but also produces environmentally friendly alternative fuels," she said.
Another researcher at PR SPBPDH BRIN, Heru Susanto, added that petasol has been tested at the BRIN laboratory and the Oil and Gas Testing Center (Lemigas) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) where petasol was declared to meet the fuel standards equivalent to biodiesel.
"The cleaner and drier the processed plastic waste, the better the yield and quality," Heru said.
Banjarnegara Regent, Amalia Desiana expressed her appreciation for the assistance and research collaboration that had been implemented. She hopes that it can be an alternative solution to the problem of waste management in the region.
"In the past two years, research has been produced that supports development in Banjarnegara. We still need BRIN's presence in the future, so that harmonization of research cooperation can be spread on a wider scale," she said.
