Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yuliot Tanjung, said Indonesia is targeting to process waste into fuel and electricity in 30 major cities by 2029, which are targeted to generate around 20 Megawatts (MW) of electricity per city.

The products obtained from waste processing are not only limited to electricity, but also include fuel oil, which will be produced using pyrolysis technology.

According to Yuliot, waste can be converted into electricity and fuel oil through integrated waste processing with the help of technology.

The Ministry of Environment said that the acceleration of the utilization of waste into energy is expected to support waste management efforts in the regions, supported by new regulations on electrification.

Meanwhile, the government is preparing three presidential regulations related to waste management to support the utilization of waste into electrical energy through waste-powered power plants (PLTSa).

Currently, there are PLTSa in 12 cities built based on Presidential Regulation No. 35/2018. However, there are two that are operating, namely PLTSa Benowo in Surabaya, East Java and PLTSa Putri Cempo Solo in Solo, Central Java.

"PLTSa in other places still have challenges here and there. This is where we want to evaluate, which ones need to be solved," Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), said on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

President Prabowo Subianto has ordered AHY to form an acceleration task force related to infrastructure and elements related to waste processing and handling nationally.

The task force will involve a number of agencies such as the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
