The government has approved an extension of the relaxation of exports of 1.3 million tons of copper concentrate for the next six months to PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI).

This decision was taken to anticipate the storage warehouse capacity which was almost full after a fire occurred at the gas cleaning plant facility at the Manyar Gresik Copper Smelter in East Java in October 2024.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, said the decision was the result of a limited meeting between the Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and a number of ministers on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

Bahlil said the decision to approve the request for an extension of the copper export relaxation was based on Freeport's status, 51 percent of which is owned by the State.

"Fifty-one percent of Freeport's shares are owned by the State. Its sulfuric acid facility was then caught in fire, which was a force majeure condition," Bahli said.

He encouraged Freeport to accelerate the repair of the gas cleaning plant facilities it had at the Manyar Smelter.

"We ask Freeport to accelerate the downstreaming process of all these concentrates so that it can occur in our country," he said.

PTFI President Director Clayton Allen (Tony) Wenas said that his company has received a recommendation to export copper concentrate from the Ministry of ESDM. Freeport is also still waiting for the issuance of an export approval letter from the Ministry of Trade.

Freeport has prepared 12 ships in Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE), Gresik, to speed up the loading process of copper concentrate for export.

Tony estimates that the export volume will range between 150,000 to 200,000 tons per month.

"So if it's six months, it could reach approximately 1.2 million tons. As stated by pak Bahlil, because the quota is 1.27 million tons," Tony said.
