Main Distribution Unit (UID) of State electricity company PLN‘s East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Region (PLN NTT) is targeting a new renewable energy generating capacity of up to 198 Megawatts (MW) by 2030, with the focus on Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP).
"Very ambitious indeed. This requires cooperation from all parties, including international parties, because PLTP cannot stand alone without other technologies," PLN Electricity System Planning Manager for the NTT Regional Main Distribution Unit, I Wayan Adi Hari, said on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Based on the 2021 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), NTT has an energy mix of 17.8 percent in 2023 and 23 percent in 2024. This target has not been achieved because until 2023 there were only 62 New Renewable Energy (EBT) power plants with a total capacity of 45.29 MW in NTT.
"If we look at the total power in NTT of around 470 MW, this means that EBT is still 10 percent," Adi said.
EBT in NTT consists of 50 Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 19.2 MW, nine micro-hydro power plants (PLTMH) with a total capacity of 6.77 MW, and three PLTPs with a capacity of 20.5 MW.
Adi concluded that based on the data, PLTP has a larger capacity than other power plants. PLN NTT will later focus on PLTP to help increase the EBT ratio.
This is reinforced by the Flores region as the region with the largest renewable energy mix in NTT, with a mix reaching 26 percent due to the presence of PLTP.
Currently, PLN NTT requires cooperation with various parties in an effort to achieve a renewable energy mix of at least 23 percent, according to the 2024 target.
"Because the construction of these massive-scale power plants will certainly be in conflict with permits, community conditions, and others. If we are not supported, we cannot get this for the sustainability of our energy in the future and our children and grandchildren in the future," Adi said.
Currently, NTT has achieved an electrification ratio of 96.37 percent as of January 2025. Through this data, there are still four areas with red zones that will be of concern to PLN, such as Sabu Raijua, South Central Timor, East Manggarai and Southwest Sumba.
Meanwhile, the ratio of electrified villages has reached 96.51 percent. Through this figure, the East Sumba region is a special concern because there are still 35 villages that do not have electricity at this time. This is caused by the location of the villages being far apart so that the electricity network is still difficult to penetrate the location.
