Indonesia pushes CCS development as key to energy security, decarbonization
Indonesia is positioning itself as a leader in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, with strong regulatory support and growing industry collaboration, an energy expert says.
Chairman of the International and Indonesia CCS Forum 2025, Evan Lukas, emphasized that CCS is no longer a future concept, but a real and feasible solution for Indonesia’s energy sector.
"CCS is the way forward," Lukas said in a speech at the Univerisity of Indonesia on Thursday, March 6, 20205, while highlighting that the technology will contribute to economic growth, energy security, and digital decarbonization.
Government policies have been accelerating CCS development, with Indonesia being among the most prepared nations in terms of regulatory frameworks.
"We already have a presidential regulation, followed by ministerial regulations, and we are aligning our national standards with international benchmarks," Lukas said.
Industry support for CCS is also expanding, with 22 national and domestic companies from various sectors − including gas, petrochemicals, and shipping − actively involved in CCS initiatives. The annual CCS forum has also played a crucial role in fostering collaboration and momentum, with an increasing number of stakeholders joining the movement.
Lukas further called on young professionals to take an active role in advancing CCS, encouraging them to become early adopters and leaders in the field.
"In the next five years, we aim to establish the first CCS industry in ASEAN and continue its expansion to support Indonesia’s growing economy," he said.
The upcoming CCS Forum in October is expected to further drive discussions on implementation strategies and industry partnerships.
