State-owned tin miner PT Timah is striving to develop tin ore mining governance by implementing a partnership pattern that directly involves the community in accordance with regulations and principles of good mining practice.

"PT Timah is determined to adapt to present a mining partnership pattern that directly involves the community," Anggi Siahaan, Head of Corporate Communication Department of PT Timah, said in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Previously, PT Timah together with the Attorney General's Office had held a coordination meeting regarding the plan for managing partnership cooperation in tin commodity mining services in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

The meeting also involved regional administrations within the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, with the aim of presenting a better partnership pattern, which will be implemented in Batu Beriga, Central Bangka Regency.

"PT Timah is committed to running this program by prioritizing sustainability aspects and collaborating with various stakeholders, including local governments, law enforcement officers, and local communities," Anggi said.

In addition, this partnership also allows Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) and community groups that meet regulations to participate in mining activities. PT Timah will mine itself by involving local communities in operational activities.

"For the mining partnership program involving the community directly, we will try it in Batu Beriga. PT Timah will mine itself by involving the local community," he said.

Currently, PT Timah is encouraging BUMDes Beriga to fulfill the requirements, such as having a Mining Services Business License (SIUJP), so that it can partner directly with the company.

"We are assisting BUMDes in the licensing process, technical aspects, and implementation of safety and environmental standards," Anggi said.

Through regulatory compliance, they will be able to partner directly with PT Timah, and the program is expected to encourage community economic independence and increase village income.

Community role

This partnership pattern, Anggi said, is expected to optimize the role of the community not only in mining activities, but also in sustainable environmental management, prevention of mining accidents and increasing contributions to the country.

Meanwhile, the program is expected to provide significant economic benefits for the local community, who will have wider access to mining-based economic activities, without illegal mining activities that pose risks to the environment and safety.
