Eramet keen in investing in Indonesia’s EV battery ecosystem, downstream processing
French multinational mining and metallurgy company, Eramet, has interest in supporting Indonesia’s Electric Vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem development and downstreaming processing.
The commitment was conveyed by Eramet Chief Eexecutive Officer, Christel Bories, during a meeting with Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto at the Indonesian Embassy in Paris on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Eramet is a key investor in the mining and downstream industries, particularly in nickel processing.
Eramet has reiterated its commitment to the Indonesian government to support industrial downstreaming by investing in green manufacturing facilities for Electric Vehicle (EV) battery production, especially in Weda Bay, Central Halmahera.
The Indonesian government welcomed this initiative as part of its broader efforts to accelerate the country’s energy transition.
“To ensure the commitment to green industry, the designated industrial location should be close to hydro energy sources to guarantee the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly energy,” Airlangga said as quoted in a statement on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
During the meeting, Airlangga and Bories discussed the next steps for Eramet’s investment plans.
Bories highlighted the need for more information on the availability of raw materials required for production in Indonesia. As a follow-up, both parties agreed on the necessity of developing a roadmap and estimating production capacity. This would serve as a basis for the Indonesian government’s support for Eramet in building a robust nickel ecosystem in the country.
Eramet also expressed its interest in expanding investments in Indonesia’s critical minerals sector through partnerships with local entities. Additionally, the company is keen on exploring investment opportunities in downstream processing in collaboration with the Investment Management Agency Daya Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara).
Furthermore, Eramet conveyed its support for the swift conclusion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EUCEPA) with the European Commission to enhance trade and investment relations between Indonesia and the European Union, particularly with France.
Airlangga reaffirmed that the partnership between Indonesia and Eramet has the potential to accelerate Indonesia’s industrial transformation towards sustainability while strengthening global supply chains.
“The Indonesia-Eramet partnership holds great potential to drive innovation, strengthen the nickel and EV battery industries, and create long-term benefits for both parties,” Airlangga emphasized.
Accompanying the Indonesian delegation to Paris were Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Susiwijono Moegiarso; Indonesian Ambassador to France, Mohamad Oemar; Deputy for Economic Cooperation and Investment, Edi Prio Pambudi; and Assistant Deputy for Multilateral Cooperation, Ferry Ardiyanto
