MedcoEnergi discovers hydrocarbons in West Kalabau-1 Well, South Sumatra
PT Medco Energi Internasional (MedcoEnergi) through its subsidiary, PT Medco E&P Rimau, has announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the West Kalabau-1 exploration well, Rimau Block, South Sumatra.
Chief Operating Officer of PT Medco Energi Internasional, Ronald Gunawan, said that this success proves that there is still untapped potential in Indonesia's mature basins.
"This achievement reflects MedcoEnergi's continued focus on carrying out safe, efficient, and responsible exploration and production," Ronald said in a statementas quoted on Monday, March 3, 2025.
The West Kalabau-1 well was drilled to a depth of approximately 3,220 feet with the main target being the Baturaja Formation, which has proven to be a productive reservoir in the region. The results of the formation evaluation and initial analysis indicate the presence of hydrocarbons, which is the basis for further development plans.
MedcoEnergi will work alongside the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) to conduct additional well testing and further technical evaluations. This step aims to assess the size and commercial feasibility of the discovery to support future field development.
Ronald added that the new discovery is expected to contribute to increasing domestic energy production and support national energy security.
"This discovery strengthens MedcoEnergi's commitment to maintaining the sustainability of national energy production by optimizing existing assets," he said.
