Mochamad Basuki Hadimuljono was born in Surakarta, Central Java in 1954. Basuki is the current Minister of Public Works and Public Housing. Basuki is the fourth of eight children. His father was a soldier from the Army. As a child he often moved around following his father's duties.

He completed his elementary school in Palembang, South Sumatra, then his junior high school in Palembang. But before he graduated he moved to Papua. Basuki also continued his high school in Papua but did not finish it and continued to SMA Negeri 5 Surabaya in East Java. He then continued his studies at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Yogyakarta where he took geological engineering and earned an engineering degree at the age of 25. He then worked at the Ministry of Public Works and received a scholarship to continue his master's and doctoral degree at Colorado State University in the USA and earned a master at the age of 35 years and a doctorate at the age of 38 years.
