Indonesia poised to become global leader in CCS: Hashim

Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the President's Special Envoy for Climate Change, is optimistic that Indonesia will become a "super power" in the carbon, capture and storage (CCS) sector.
Through the development of CCS, the Indonesian coal industry can still thrive in the long term amidst Indonesia's target of achieving net zero emissions (NZE).
According to him, not everything that smells of coal is bad. He believes that currently there is CCS technology that can reduce emissions.
"I just found out that this CCS will open up opportunities for coal to live longer," he said on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
He said the carbon dioxide produced by industries that use coal will later absorb carbon in the atmosphere or that produced by the coal industry.
Hashim cited that Indonesia has a very large and abundant CCS cavity, with a CCS potential of 500-700 Gigawatts (GW) to accommodate gas, both produced domestically and from other countries.
"The giant project that ExxonMobil will build 100 kilometer (Km) from the north coast of Banten will reach 3 GW. That is already big. We have a potential of 500-700 GW," he said.
Therefore, Hashim is optimistic about the future of the Indonesian CCS industry. “The future of the Indonesian coal industry is very bright.”
