RI sets ambitious goal for 42GW nuclear power by 2060, first operational plant in 2032

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has set the target for Indonesia to have Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN) with total capacity of 42 gigawatts (GW) by 2060.

 

Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the ESDM ministry, said that the target was stated in the revision of the National Energy Policy (KEN) on the roadmap for the development of nuclear power plants.

 

"Until 2060, there will be 35 GW to 42 GW (of installed nuclear power plants in Indonesia)," Eniya said on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

 

She cited that Indonesia's first nuclear power plant is targeted to operate in 2032 with a capacity of 250 Megawatts (MW). Its capacity will then increase to 3 GW in 2035 and 9 GW in 2040.

 

The roadmap for the development of nuclear power plants in Indonesia is based on the guidelines set by the International Atomic Agency (IAEA).

 

Meanwhile, the government is currently waiting for several policies to facilitate preparations for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Indonesia.

 

Furthermore, the regulations that are considered to facilitate this readiness are the Draft Law (RUU) on New and Renewable Energy (EBT) and the revision of the Electricity Law.

 

"If the Nuclear Power Law differentiates with regard to non-nuclear power plants, it is mentioned in the revised Nuclear Power Law, but regarding nuclear power plants themselves, it has been mentioned in the EBT Bill," she said.
