The Jakarta gubernatorial race heats up, with two of the three candidate pairs − Ridwan Kamil-Suswono (RIDO) and Pramono Anung-Rano Karno − presenting their campaign promises aimed at tackling the city's pressing issues.

Both pairs vow to address major challenges, such as traffic congestion, flooding, job creation, and improving local sports.

During a recent discussion on the program “Mata Lokal Memimpin Jakarta” presided by Domu D. Ambarita, the deputy director of Tribun Network, campaign spokespeople Iwan Tarigan for Pramono-Rano and Alia Noorayu Laksono for Ridwan-Suswono detailed their ambitious plans to secure the top leadership position in Jakarta.

Iwan Tarigan emphasized that the Pramono-Rano ticket focuses on community welfare rather than just physical infrastructure. He noted that addressing basic issues like water access in public housing is essential, stating, “A governor’s large programs might not be what the people actually need. It's crucial to resolve fundamental issues first.”

Alia Noorayu Laksono, speaking for RIDO, shared their campaign plans to foster connections between schoolchildren and the elderly, aiming to alleviate loneliness among seniors and instil humanitarian values in youth.

Both candidate pairs have outlined specific initiatives:

Pramono Anung-Rano Karno:

  • Establishing community centers in every sub-district for various events.
  • Creating pathways for elementary school graduates to join local volunteer teams without needing a high school diploma.
  • Offering free education in small private schools funded by Jakarta's budget.
  • Developing a waterway transport system to the Thousand Islands to boost tourism.
  • Expanding Transjakarta bus routes and promoting remote work to ease traffic.

Ridwan Kamil-Suswono:

  • Revitalizing the Tanah Abang Livestock Market with a multifunctional design.
  • Setting up a permanent public complaint center to address community grievances.
  • Committing to make the Jakarta International Stadium the home of Persija Jakarta, involving fan group Jakmania in its management.
  • Extending Transjakarta bus routes to nearby commuter cities like Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi.

The campaign period is underway, running from September 25 to November 23, 2024, as both pairs strive to demonstrate their dedication to solving Jakarta's challenges.

Indonesia's current politics towards the 2024 elections

Indonesia’s political maturity will be tested again in the 2024 General Elections or at least one-and-a-half years from now as the electoral contestation will begin. The stages of the elections have been carried out, and there have been nonsignificant obstacles, including the expiration of the terms of office of 271 regional heads (governors, regents and mayors) in 2022 and 2023, which have also been handled quite well by the government although they still receive criticism from the Indonesian Ombudsman. Indonesia assessed that there were at least three acts of maladministration that occurred in the appointment of acting regional heads.
