The governments of the United Kingdom and Indonesia signed a strategic partnership on critical minerals in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the UK Minister for Development & Women and Equalities, Anneliese Dodds, and Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia.

Recognizing the pivotal role that critical minerals play in the global energy transition, both countries are committed to establishing a cooperative framework that enhances collaboration on critical mineral sector.

This partnership will facilitate policy dialogues and the sharing of technical knowledge, skills, and expertise, encompassing key areas such as supply chain resilience and security, sustainable upstream and downstream processing, and mineral criticality.

The MoU also aims to support the development of a robust policy framework that promotes Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices within the sector.

This collaboration is expected to stimulate strategic business partnerships, fostering the development and investment in critical minerals across Indonesia. It will also create pathways for both the UK and Indonesia to contribute meaningfully to the global energy transition through sustainable critical minerals development.

"I am so delighted that as the new UK government, we have concluded this agreement. This strategic collaboration not only strengthens our bilateral relations, but also puts both countries as key players in the critical minerals supply chain,” Minister Dodds said.

She said further that through collaboration, both countries can create sustainable growth opportunities.

“It’s been wonderful to work step by step together with the Indonesian government on this. The UK and Indonesia are committed to working together in sustainable critical mineral development, fostering innovation and progress for a greener and resilient future,” she concluded.
