The Indonesian government is seeking to develop low earth orbit (LEO) satellites similar to Starlink, with the initial of submitting an application for non-geostationary satellite orbit (NGSO) slots for equatorial orbit.
Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi, accompanied by Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, WTO, and other international organizations, Febrian A Ruddyard, met with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin to discuss strategic matters under ITU's scope, including Indonesia's plan for developing LEO satellites.
Budi emphasized that Indonesia aims to be a competitive global developer of LEO satellites, not just a user. Therefore, discussions with ITU explored possible collaborations to realize this development plan.
A media release from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics stipulates that ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin has indicated that Indonesia could proceed with the registration in accordance with the established procedures and expressed openness of the ITU to build a partnership.
Potential collaboration forms include capacity development, leveraging various substantive forums, and expert support.
