The Japanese government has announced plans to develop a 5G Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN), an architecture concept in telecommunication networks that allows operators to select and combine hardware and software from various vendors.
Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Masaki Yasushi, said during his visit to the Ministry of Communication and Informatics in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 that the project aims to reduce costs and enhance flexibility in building 5G infrastructure.
Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Informatics, Budi Arie Setiadi, said that the Indonesian government is also in the process of drafting a masterplan for the development of 5G infrastructure.
In this regard, the government is open to receiving input and suggestions from countries that have already implemented 5G technology.
"We are currently drafting a masterplan for the development of 5G. So, what input does Japan have for Indonesia? We are open to receiving input or suggestions," Budi in a media statement on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
The Ministry of Communication and Informatics is currently conducting a Feasibility Study for the Implementation of Open RAN for a year, divided into 14 milestones. This study involves mobile network operators in pilot projects at two designated locations, with the aim of examining the possibility of implementing Open RAN in Indonesia.
