The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has announced a strategic partnership with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) to delve into the untapped potential of 'super rare treasure,' namely Rare Earth Metals, abundant in Indonesia.

Muhammad Wafid, Head of the Geological Agency of the ESDM Ministry, disclosed that the collaboration commenced in 2024, with a keen focus on unlocking the wealth of resources lying beneath the surface. One of the primary areas of interest in this exploration venture is the Mamuju region nestled within the picturesque landscapes of West Sulawesi.

Wafid elaborated that the Mamuju region has progressed to the proposal stage, eagerly awaiting approval from the Minister of ESDM and the Directorate General of Minerals and Coal before it is officially earmarked for auction.

Simultaneously, the Geological Agency is steadfast in its commitment to meticulously explore 47 critical minerals and 22 strategic minerals spread across the archipelago of Indonesia.

This exploration effort underscores Indonesia's dedication to harnessing its rich geological endowment for national development.

"We are continuously venturing into uncharted territories, exploring critical minerals and strategic minerals across Indonesia. These minerals play a pivotal role in various sectors, including electronics, defense equipment, and futuristic innovations," Wafid said, while emphasizing the multifaceted significance of these geological treasures.

Through this strategic collaboration with KIGAM, Indonesia aims to leverage the expertise and technological advancements of South Korea in the field of geoscience and mineral resources.

This synergy is poised to catalyze sustainable development initiatives while fostering knowledge exchange and capacity-building efforts in the realm of mineral exploration and exploitation.
