"In accordance with the President's direction, an online gambling task force will be established, with Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs as the chairman, Minister of Communication and Informatics as Head of the Prevention Unit and National Police Chief as Head of the Operation Unit," Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi said in a media statement on Monday, May 27,2024.

He revealed that in a period between July 17, 2023 and May 21, 2024, the government had succeeded in reducing 1,904,246 online gambling contents. The government also blocked e-wallet accounts affiliated with online gambling.

"A total of 5,364 blocked e-wallet accounts have been passed to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and another 555 to Bank Indonesia," Budi said.

The government has also coordinated with a number of platforms in an attempt to eradicate online gambling on the upstream side.

"Changes in gambling keywords are made on Google with 20,241 new keywords issued and on Meta with 2,637 new keywords issued. By doing so, we can complete the eradication of online gambling at the upstream level," the minister said.

Budi also cited the phenomenon of "phishing" or infiltration of online gambling content into a number of educational and government institutions. He revealed that 14,823 online gambling contents had infiltrated into educational institutions, and another 17,001 contents were found to have infiltrated government sites and institutions.

"We have also issued warnings to platforms − TikTok, Google, Meta. For more than a month since the last meeting about online gambling (from April 19 to May 21, 2024) we have taken down 290,850 contents, or almost 300,000 a month, 10,000 online gambling contents a day," he said.
