Indonesian Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto met with Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, David Hurley, at the residence of the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia on Friday, May 17, 2024, discussing bilateral military cadets exchange program.

This year, Indonesia and Australia celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations. In addition, this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the cadet exchange program between the Indonesian Military Academy (AKMIL) and the Royal Military College (RMC) Duntroon.

Defense Minister Prabowo and Governor General Hurley were alumni of the cadet exchange program in 1974. Both men recalled their time as cadets and acknowledged the importance of the program in building the foundations of a strong military relationship between Indonesia and Australia.

"This cadet exchange program has produced a generation of military leaders who not only have high professional skills, but also a deep understanding of each country's culture and strategic environment. Governor-General Hurley and I have both benefited greatly from this program," Prabowo said.

Prabowo expressed his hope that the relationship between Indonesia and Australia will become even closer in the future.

"I hope the relationship between Indonesia and Australia continues to be strengthened through closer defense cooperation, with the same collaborative spirit. Together, we can face global and regional security challenges more effectively," he said.

On the occasion, the Indonesian defense minister presented a plaque and his book entitled "Military Leadership" to Governor General Hurley. On the other hand, Prabowo received a book entitled "Peter Fitzsimons - Gallipoli" and a photo of the RMC Duntroon building with a handwritten "To fond memories and strong bonds" from David Hurley.
