RI advocates for green energy infrastructure collaboration at World Water Forum

The Indonesian government is advocating for the exchange of knowledge, research, innovation, and technology in water resource management with other countries at the 10th World Water Forum held on May 18-25, 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali.

One of the topics highlighted is the development of green energy-based infrastructure to support the target of Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060.

Chairman of the National Committee for the Organization of the 10th World Water Forum and Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, emphasized that the Ministry of PUPR prioritizes sustainable environmental principles in infrastructure development by optimizing all available potentials.

"One of the principles is strengthening the utilization of 187 existing dams and 61 new dams built from 2015 to 2024. This is to provide renewable electricity from water and solar energy and to develop Waste to Energy projects," Basuki said.

Furthermore, the Ministry of PUPR is developing waste-to-energy projects to utilize methane gas generated from waste as an alternative energy source, already implemented in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, and Banjarbakula, South Kalimantan.

Basuki also mentioned the application of the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) method in various waste processing facilities. Additionally, to address water supply and drought issues, the Ministry of PUPR has implemented Hydro-Powered Water Pump (PATH) technology, which utilizes turbine-driven water pumps without transforming it into electrical energy.

In parallel with research and technology development in water resources, Deputy for Development Policy of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Mego Pinandito, highlighted the importance of international research collaboration in tackling water crises due to climate change effects. BRIN will introduce various water resource-related technologies during the 10th World Water Forum, including disaster monitoring technology and hybrid wetland systems for textile industry pollution treatment.
