PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (PNRE), a subsidiary of State energy company PT Pertamina and member of the Task Force for the Acceleration of Sugar and Bioethanol Self-Sufficiency in Merauke, South Papua, is opening communication with Brazil for bioethanol development cooperation.

PNRE President Director, John Anis, says Indonesia needs to learn from Brazil on bioethanol development.

“Brazil is the world’s largest bioethanol producer. It has been producing this specific petrol substitute since the 1970s. So, we need to learn and collaborate with Brazil,” John Anis said after attending the BUMN Indonesia Business Forum event in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

He said further that cooperation with Brazil is necessary in view of several challenges in bioethanol development, including the availability of raw materials (feedstock).

“Therefore, cooperation with Brazil must be carried out so that Indonesia can learn and provide ethanol quickly to support the energy transition,” he said.

Furthermore, John said, PNRE is opening the opportunity for a consortium to develop 2 million hectares of land in Merauke for bioethanol.

“Until now, the consortium is still in the discussion stage and there has been no agreement with other parties as yet,” he said.

Director of Biofuel Department at the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, Marlon Arraes Jardim, said that such a collaboration in bioethanol development is a good example of south-south cooperation.

"I believe that we can provide the society with the cheapest decarbonization for the transportation sector," Arraes said on the sidelines of the "Sustainable Mobility: Ethanol Talks 2023" event in Jakarta last October.
