Mahfud MD, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, has formally announced his resignation from the ministerial position, citing ethical considerations and the desire to avoid conflicts of interest as the primary reasons for stepping down.

He expressed hope that his decision would contribute to ensuring a fair and unbiased Presidential Election.

In a written statement, Mahfud MD stated, "I am keen on avoiding conflicts of interest and political interference."

During a press conference in Lampung Tengah, he elaborated on the timing of his resignation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining ethical standards due to the respect accorded to him by President Joko Widodo.

"We must avoid any perception of taking advantage of the position," Mahfud remarked.

Mahfud MD, who was the running mate of presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo, further explained that his decision was not a new consideration and had been contemplated for some time.

He initially planned to step down from the Onward Indonesia Cabinet before the first debate. However, Mahfud highlighted two key reasons that led to the postponement of his resignation.

Firstly, he expressed gratitude to President Jokowi for the honor of being appointed as the Coordinating Minister, and he felt an ethical obligation toward the President.

Secondly, Mahfud underscored his commitment to ethical campaigning, emphasizing that he refrained from using state facilities for campaign purposes during his role as a vice-presidential candidate.
