The Indonesian had initiated the development of the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem since 2020. However, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics believed that more comprehensive regulations in the field of AI are necessary.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, said that the government recognizes the positive impact of AI technology. However, artificial intelligence also carries potential risks that must be carefully managed to avoid adverse effects on humanity.
"In response to AI advancements, there is a need for supportive policies, such as content moderation, balance, non-discrimination, and efforts to enhance digital literacy," Nezar said during the Global AI Governance and Generative AI session at the Internet Governance Forum in Kyoto, Japan on Monday, October 9, 2023.
"We must acknowledge that AI brings various risks, such as privacy breaches and intellectual property misuse, which require careful handling," Nezar added.
Therefore, according to him, there is a need for AI technology policies, including practical implementation and consumer use.
In relation to AI development, the Indonesian government has been taken the following steps since 2020:
- Establishing the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Document for the Republic of Indonesia 2020-2045.
- Regulating the standard classification of AI-based business line development.
- Enacting Law No. 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection, which accommodates complex data processing.
