The Malaysian federal government has ambitious intentions to enhance the nation's railway network, which also involves establishing a train connection to Indonesia's Kalimantan province.

Anthony Loke, the Minister of Transport, has shared that Sabah and Sarawak are planning to create a railway link to Kalimantan.

He mentioned that Sarawak already has the Pan Borneo Highway, which is close to completion. The state's long-term vision encompasses not just interconnecting the major cities within Sarawak but ultimately extending the rail network to Nusantara, the new capital of Indonesia.

Regarding the primary areas within Sarawak, the plan is to establish railway connections along the coastal route, connecting cities such as Kuching to Sibu, Sibu to Bintulu, and Bintulu to Miri. These connections constitute the central corridor among the cities.

Minister Loke conveyed his thoughts during the Women in Rail Malaysia Conference 2023, held in Kuala Lumpur.

He also emphasized that by creating a rail link, Sarawak could serve as a conduit for goods and maritime trade to and from Kalimantan.
