Many claims Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) renovation driven by political motives
A number of individuals said that the renovation of the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) could not be separated from political maneuvers related to general elections.
Rio Paryogo, Director of Politika Research and Consulting (PRC) said that the renovation from JIS would have an electoral impact on Anies Baswedan and Erick Thohir.
"After all this commotion, who gets electoral incentives? Anies or Erick Thohir, but this is my opinion. Seeing this situation, it's rather difficult to say that this does not have political context," said Paryogo, on July 5, 2023.
Highlighting JIS's political element
He considered that there were two things that underlies the JIS renovation policy to have a political context, such as the struggle for power and public policy.
"First, the struggle for power is underway, the election is in sight. Then the JIS development policy and the renovation issue are also public policies, so both are political matters," he said.
He explained that the JIS renovation would indirectly involve Erick Thohir as General Chair of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).
"We know that the actors are Erick Thohir, chairman of PSSI, who also really wants to run in the 2024 presidential election. We know that Erick Thohir is very fast in branding himself as a potential future leader of Indonesia," Rio said.
Rio added that it is also important to remember that JIS was built during Anies Baswedan's term as Governor of DKI to allow Indonesia to host the U-17 World Cup.
Political party responds
The United Development Party (PPP) responded that regulations in the world of football had been made according to FIFA standards.
According to Achmad Baidowi, Chair of the PPP Central Leadership Council (DPP), it is very natural for JIS to be renovated if it is deemed not according to FIFA standards.
"So the sport of football has regulations, it's called FIFA regulations. FIFA's derivative in Indonesia is PSSI," said Baidowi, on July 5, 2023.
“If the standards are appropriate, then go ahead and invite FIFA," he said.
Baidowi disagrees if the JIS renovation is related to political matters, he suggests that it is better to refer to FIFA regulations.
