Two groundbreaking nickel smelters set to boost prosperity in Kalimantan
In an attempt enhancing industrial capabilities and bolstering the local economy, two state-of-the-art nickel smelters, are planned to be constructed in the province of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. These transformative projects represent a combined investment of IDR 36.5 trillion.
The first of these nickel smelters will be established in the bustling city of Balikpapan, specifically in the Kariangau area, with a substantial investment of IDR 6.5 trillion by PT Mitra Murni Perkasa (MMP).
The second smelter will be strategically located in Pendingin, Sanga Sanga District, Kutai Kartanegara, with an impressive investment of IDR 30 trillion facilitated by PT Kalimantan Ferro Industry (KFI).
Hadi Mulyadi, the Deputy Governor of East Kalimantan, expressed his optimism about the positive impact these smelters would have on the well-being of the local community and the nation at large.
"We firmly believe that the presence of these smelter facilities will elevate the prosperity of East Kalimantan and, indeed, all of Indonesia. It's a testament to our commitment to contribute to the nation," remarked Hadi on September 12, 2023.
The construction of the Nickel Matte Smelter in Balikpapan Barat is already underway, marked by the momentous laying of the foundation stone by Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. This facility is set to play a pivotal role in processing raw materials for batteries. Meanwhile, the inauguration of the smelter in Kutai Kartanegara is expected to take place shortly.
Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita underscored the importance of the Nickel Matte Smelter project in supporting the burgeoning battery industry in Indonesia.
"MMP's investment is entirely domestically sourced, and we aspire to foster downstream industries that are not only beneficial but also instrumental in advancing our national battery industry," he stated.
The target timeline for these developments is ambitious yet promising, with construction slated for completion by the end of 2024, followed by full-scale operations and the production of national batteries.
The collaborative efforts of the local community and government support are expected to propel East Kalimantan and Indonesia towards greater progress and prosperity.
