The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) and Bersama Digital Data Center (BDDC) officially launched the Second Indonesia Internet Exchange Jakarta (IIX-JK2) at the newest data center facility, JST1 (Jakarta-South-East-1) in East Jakarta.
The creation of IIX-JK2 aims to strengthen Indonesia’s digital ecosystem by providing efficient, fast and secure interconnection infrastructure, as well as answering the industry’s need for reliable connectivity.
IIX-JK2 helps complement the Indonesia Internet Exchange (IIX) located in Cyber 1 building, by bringing internet service providers (ISPs) closer to digital content providers and hyperscalers, which is expected to increase the efficiency of managing ever-increasing data traffic.
Established in 1997, IIX is a national interconnection point for ISP operated by APJII, located in Cyber 1 building, Jakarta.
“With internet traffic growth increasing more than tenfold in the last three years, from 1.3 Tbps (One trillion bits per second) in 2021 to 14 Tbps at the end of 2024 (peak traffic), the presence of IIX-JK2 is an urgent need,” Muhammad Arif, APJII General Chairperson, said on Monday, January 6, 2025.
This infrastructure enables ISPs to connect their traffic more efficiently, reduce latency, and support digital transformation and national data sovereignty.
Setyanto Hantoro, BDDC’s President Commissioner, said JST1 was designed as a Tier IV facility with global certification from the Uptime Institute with a capacity of 5 megawatts (mw).
Some of the strategic advantages of IIX-JK2 are:
- Close to Content Providers and Hyperscalers: Facilitate interconnection with global content providers such as Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and other digital platforms;
- Scalable and Globally Certified Infrastructure: JST1 is designed with a scalable capacity of up to 5 mw;
- Support for Data Sovereignty: IIX-JK2 operations are conducted in Indonesia, in accordance with national regulations to protect local data privacy;
- Increase Meet-Me-Room (MMR) Capacity: Provide more physical interconnections to support data traffic efficiency;
- Ease of Physical Network Access: JST1’s location makes it easier for network operators to access data center facilities.
Previously, the data center market in Indonesia grew rapidly with a value reaching US$3.7 billion (Rp9.8 trillion). Meanwhile, according to projections by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo, now the Ministry of Communication and Digital Application (Komdigi)), Southeast Asia will have a data center capacity of 2,733 mw by 2028.
