Commissioner General Setyo Budiyanto was elected as Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the 2024-2029 period in a plenary session of the House of Representatives’ (DPR) Law Enforcement Commission III on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Setyo, a three-star police general, was previously Inspector General of the Ministry of Agriculture since March 2024. He had earlier served as an investigator at the anticorruption commission for quite a long time.
Setyo secured 45 votes out of a total of 48 members of Commission III who were present, making him the elected chairman of the anti-corruption agency for the next five years.
Setyo will lead together with four other commissioners: Johanis Tanak, Fitroh Rohcahyanto, Agus Joko Pramono, and Ibnu Basuki Widodo.
The plenary meeting was held to choose five names out of 10 KPK leadership candidates, who had earlier passed the fit and proper test.
“Each member of Commission III is required to choose five leadership candidates and five KPK Supervisory Board candidates on the ballot,” Habiburokhman, Chairman of Commission III, said.
In addition to electing the KPK leadership, the plenary meeting also appointed five members of the KPK Supervisory Board (Dewas) for the 2024-2029 period.
Setyo, along with four other KPK leaders, will face various major challenges, including strengthening theinstitution and law enforcement measures under the spotlight of the public.
Track record
Responding to the election of Setyo as KPK chairman, former KPK investigator Yudi Purnomo said that a tough task awaits Setyo’s leadership in the future, namely restoring public trust on the KPK.
“I believe Setyo is capable because he has had experience in anticorruption drive as he once served as Director of Investigation at the KPK. Corruption eradication will certainly be his priority,” Yudi spoke to Indonesia Business Post, shortly after Setyo was declared the elected chairman.
Yudi, who once worked along with Setyo in the KPK, claimed that Setyo has had no bad track while serving atthe KPK. He believed that Setyo’s current position as Inspector General at the Ministry of Agriculture is also useful in corruption prevention, especially forsystem improvement and digitization.
