State-owned power utility PT PLN is ready to meet the needs of green electricity for the industrial sector in Indonesia, through its Green Energy as A Service (GEAS) program that will provide clean electricity from new renewable energy-based power plants.
PLN’s support for the provision of clean electricity for the industry was conveyed in the “Green Energy Buyers Dialogue” agenda which brought together all stakeholders in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), including representatives of the Indonesian Government, representatives of the International Partners Group (IPG), Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), international and domestic private banks, and business actors in Jakarta, on July 12, 2024.
“PLN provides green electricity through the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) as an internationally recognized GEAS product. Each REC certificate proves that the electricity per megawatt hour (MWh) used comes from renewable or non-fossil power plants,” PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said in a statement as quoted on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
To ensure that green electricity is fulfilled, PLN continues to increase the capacity of new and renewable energy plants in the country. Until 2023, the development of PLN’s renewable plants has reached 8,786 megawatts (MW). With details of hydro-based plants of 5,777 MW, geothermal-based plants of 2,519 MW, and the rest comes from solar, wind and biomass.
PLN and the government are also finalizing an increase in the renewable energy mix in the National Electricity General Plan and the latest Electricity Addition Business Plan. The target is that the addition of generating capacity in Indonesia in the future will be supported by renewable energy.
“So, from today until 2040, an additional capacity of 21 Gigawatts (GW) comes from gas power plants, 28 GW from solar and wind power, 31 GW from hydropower and geothermal power, 2.4 GW from new energy,” Darmawan said.
