A subsidiary of Indonesia state owned energy company Pertamina, Pertamina Patra Niaga, and PT Sojitz Indonesia established a strategic partnership to support energy transition and carbon emission reduction through the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) product.

The product is produced by Pertamina Renewable Diesel, a joint venture between Pertamina Patra Niaga and Sojitz.

The cooperation with PT Sojitz in the utilization of HVO is part of Pertamina Patra Niaga’s commitment to become an energy solution provider and a major partner in decarbonization in the industrial sector. It was outlined through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between PT Pertamina Patra Niaga’s Central and Commercial Marketing Director, Maya Kusmaya and PT Sojitz Indonesia’s CEO, Seiji Itagaki in Bali on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

“Pertamina Patra Niaga not only focuses on providing products, but also on the impact of every energy solution we offer. This collaboration is tangible evidence of our efforts to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, both for industry and society at large,” Maya Kusmaya said as quoted in a statement on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

She added that the HVO produced at Green Refinery Cilacap has also been internationally recognized through the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and has made its first distribution to PT Sojitz for testing on PT MHI Engine System diesel generator engines.

“HVO has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 85 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent, making it an environmentally friendly energy solution and supporting the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target by 2060, even in product specifications, HVO can be directly used on diesel engines without modification, so it is hoped that the positive impact on the environment can be expanded and support the clean energy transition, especially in the industrial sector,” Maya said.

In addition to HVO, Pertamina Patra Niaga and PT Sojitz Indonesia are also exploring various other renewable energy development potentials, including the provision of raw materials such as UCO (Used Cooking Oil) and POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) and carbon credits.

On the same occasion, CEO of PT Sojitz Indonesia, Seiji Itagaki said that this collaboration is an important milestone in an effort to support sustainable business goals for both companies and provide new environmentally friendly energy solutions in the future.

“Sojitz Indonesia is committed to contributing significantly to sustainable business efforts. Collaboration with Pertamina Patra Niaga is an important step towards achieving carbon emission reduction in Indonesia,” Itagaki said.

Rudi Kurniawan, Head of the National Capacity and Quality Assurance Division at the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) also appreciated the cooperation between Pertamina Patra Niaga and PT Sojitz Indonesia.

He cited that the HVO product trial was also successfully carried out at one of the Pertamina EP Field Cepu Cooperation Contractors (KKKS) as a form of domestic product development and is expected to be implemented in the future in various upstream oil and gas sectors.
