Indonesia’s seventh President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has responded to his nomination by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) as one of the most corrupt public figure in 2024, demanding proof of all the allegations.
“Most corrupt? Most corrupt what? What is being corrupted?,” Jokowi said as quoted by Antara on Wednesday, January 1, 2024.
Jokowi believes that currently there is a lot of slander, evil framing, and accusations without evidence directed at him.
There was also a question about the political motive behind the nomination of the most corrupt leader. According to Jokowi, certain parties can even use community organizations to make such accusations.
OCCRP is the world’s largest investigative journalism organization. Its findings are uploaded on the official page occrp.org.
“These corrupt governments violate human rights, manipulate elections, plunder natural resources, and ultimately create conflict through their inherent instability,” OCCRP Publisher Drew Sullivan, said on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
Jokowi is on the list of finalists for Person of the Year 2024 in the category of organizational crime and corruption. Apart from Jokowi, five state leaders and businessmen are also on the list. The other five figures are Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, Kenyan President William Ruto, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Indian businessman Gautam Adani.
