The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has finalized the selection of  the new Director General of Oil and Gas, including a 30-minute interview with each candidate, assessment on written papers and evaluation by the ministry's secretariat on five candidates interviewed in late April.

"The results will be a combination of those three components," Secretary General of the ESDM Ministry, Dadan Kusdiana, said, while adding that the final decision is now pending the President’s approval.

"If the presidential decree is issued, then the inauguration can follow," he told reporters on Friday, April 25, 2025.

According to Dadan, the selection panel also asked candidates specific questions related to ensuring the implementation of strategic targets set by the Energy Minister and the President, as well as governance reform in the oil and gas sector.

The five shortlisted candidates are Alimuddin Baso, Julian Ambassadur Shiddiq, Laode Sulaeman, Mirza Mahendra, and Noor Arifin Muhammad − all of whom are internal officials within the ESDM ministry.

As reported by Ruangenergi.com, the interview panel included the Secretary General, Inspector General, and Acting Director General of Oil and Gas at the ESDM Ministry, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Administrative Reform, the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), and the Ministry of Finance. Once the panel concludes its evaluation, the result is submitted for approval by ESDM Minister Bahlil Lahadalia before being forwarded to President Prabowo Subianto for formal designation.

Although the inauguration will be presided by the ESDM Minister, the official appointment of the Director General of Oil and Gas is under the authority of the President through a presidential decree (Keppres). This underlines the strategic importance of the position, which serves directly under presidential direction.

“The core responsibility of officials in the ESDM Ministry is to implement the President’s vision and mission − not the personal vision of the Minister,” Bahlil emphasized, reaffirming that the role of Director General of Oil and Gas is aligned with national policy objectives.
