Bakrie Group oil and gas company, PT Energi Mega Persada (EMP), along with its subsidiary PT Pema Global Energi (PGE), has announced plans to develop Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) facility in Arun Field, Aceh.

Arun Field is considered one of the most potential CCS locations in Southeast Asia, with a carbon storage capacity of 16 trillion cubic feet (TCF). Since starting production in 1978, this field has infrastructure and geological conditions that greatly support the development of large-scale decarbonization technology.

EMP CEO, Syailendra S. Bakrie, revealed that EMP and PGE will conduct a comprehensive feasibility study by forming an internal technical team and appointing experienced independent consultants as an initial step.

"This study is targeted to be completed in 2026 in compliance with applicable regulations, including Regulation of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 2/2023," Syailendra said in a statement as quoted on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

To ensure the success of this program, EMP will also form a special Carbon Management division that will handle the development of CCS/CCUS facilitythroughout the company's work areas.

Syailendra added that this division will be a catalyst in creating new opportunities through the Carbon Infrastructure & Offset Services (CIOS) initiative as part of the company's long-term roadmap.

Despite developing decarbonization projects, EMP emphasized that the company's main focus would remain on the upstream oil and gas sector as the core of its long-term growth strategy.

However, CCS and CCUS are considered not only as solutions to reducing carbon emissions, but also business opportunities that can provide added value for shareholders.

"We believe this initiative can increase long-term returns, in line with sustainable and environmentally conscious business growth. Our main focus remains on upstream oil and gas, but we are also adaptive in capturing new opportunities that are strategically relevant,"Syailendra said.

He suggested that this measure is part of the company's commitment to supporting Indonesia's net zero emission target by 2060 and strengthening the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).
