Govt to regulate free nutritious meals program as beneficiaries surge to 82.9 million

Zulkifli-hasan
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan, has indicated that the government will issue regulations related to the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program upon considering the projected drastic increase of the program beneficiaries from 2.05 million people per day last month to 82.9 million people per day starting September 2025.
"This is a big concern, therefore a regulation is needed. Later there will be a Presidential Instruction that regulates each institution's duties," Zulkifli said on Monday, March 3, 2025.
He said the number of MBG beneficiaries is estimated to increase to around 3 million people this month, so the budget absorbed will reach Rp2 trillion (US$60.8 million) per month.
Meanwhile, the need for food is expected to increase gradually. Such as the need for eggs which will increase to 5 million tons per day to serve 82.9 million people.
He stressed that the additional number of beneficiaries would increase the complexity of program implementation, especially in terms of supply chains, which can differ in each region.
Head of the National Nutrition Agency, Dadan Hindayana, cited that one of the main impacts of this program is on the national egg industry. Currently, domestic egg production has reached self-sufficiency status, but only about 30 percent of production is absorbed by the community.
"So far, national egg production has been excessive. However, with the MBG program, a special supply chain for the egg industry will definitely be needed to meet demand," Dadan said on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Furthermore, in order to meet the MBG target by September 2025, the egg industry must be able to provide 5 million tons of eggs per day. This will require adjustments in the distribution chain as well as increasing the production capacity of local farmers.
