As part of its goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2060, state-owned electricity company PT PLN invited all shareholders, mainly private sectors, to participate in the development of renewable energy plants.

The company's Electricity Procurement Plan (RUPTL) calls for the development of 9 GW (gigaWatts) or 900 MW of renewable energy sources.

PLN Director of Mega Projects and New and Renewable Energy, Wiluyo Kusdwiharto, said the renewable energy-based power plants would likely to require US$500 billion in funding.

"We are unable to develop them by ourselves. We need participation from all stakeholders, including the private sectors, to develop renewable energy power plants," he said on June 2, 2022.

"Independent power producers produce almost 12 GW of electricity, which means we are creating an environment where the private sectors can develop renewable energy together," he added.

By 2021, PLN has built an additional renewable energy power plant of 623 MW, including 260 MW from the Poso hydropower plant in Central Sulawesi.

Aside from Poso plant, there are also 90 MW Malea hydroelectric plants in Toraja, South Sulawesi; 57 MW Sorik Marapi geothermal power plants in Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra; and 98 MW Rantau Dedap geothermal power plants in Lahat, South Sumatra.

PLN has also implemented several other projects including co-firing power plants using biomass and coal, de-dieselization and wind energy development.
