PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), in partnership with PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, set up collaboration with three regional administrations to utilize critical land for sowing biomass that will be used to generate coal-fired power plants (PLTU) and to provide training on multifunctional plants to local communities.

PLN Nusantara Power's President Director, Ruly Firmansyah, said that the initiative, which involves the governments of Trenggalek, Pacitan, and Kapuas regencies, is aimed at improving environmental quality.

"This initiative is part of PLN NP's commitment to achieving net zero emissions (NZE), which requires strategic synergy with various stakeholders, including local governments, while also optimizing land use and empowering communities," Ruly said in a statement as quoted on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

He noted that PLN NP has been researching and implementing the co-firing method since 2018. In 2023 alone, PLN NP produced 511 GWh of clean energy from co-firing, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 651,743 tons. By 2024, PLN NP plans to continue co-firing operations across 25 coal-fired power plants nationwide.

Co-firing is a method where a portion of the coal used in power plants is substituted with other materials, in this case, biomass.

This approach not only reduces the reliance on fossil fuels but also addresses waste management issues and stimulates the local economy.

Materials used for co-firing include solid recovered fuel (BBJP), corn waste, sawdust, and palm kernel shells.
