Indonesia holds significant potential for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), with an estimated 950 million stock tank barrels (mmstb) across 12 project locations nationwide.

“This is very significant, as shown by the extensive area suitable for waterflood and EOR, calculated from this potential,” Dwi Soetjipto, Head of the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) told a hearing with Commission VII of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

SKK Migas has identified EOR as a crucial strategy to boost national oil and gas production. Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Arifin Tasrif recently visited China to observe their implementation of EOR techniques.

“They (China) have extensive experience and technology in EOR, showing interest in Indonesia's EOR potential, provided there is cooperation with Pertamina and other oil companies,” Dwi added.

EOR was a key topic during a special coordination meeting led by Minister Arifin Tasrif, attended by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, the Head of SKK Migas, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.

"Various forms of support are provided to optimize the EOR process, including diverse incentives and investment-supporting policies to attract investors," Sri Mulyani shared on her Instagram account @smindrawati on Thursday.

Based on SKK Migas’ assessment, there are 12 projects that have notable EOR potential:
