“There is already a roadmap from Toyota and several Japanese manufacturers, including Mitsubishi, regarding the EV roadmap,” Airlangga told the Nikkei Forum 29th Future of Asia, held on Friday, May 24, 2024.

In addition, Japan is involved in copper smelter projects, which are part of the energy transition within the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC). Both Indonesia and Japan were initiators of AZEC, launched during the G20 Summit in Bali, November 2023.

The AZEC Summit in December 2023 resulted in 69 collaborative agreements, with 24 involving Indonesian and Japanese companies. These agreements include training initiatives to promote energy transition, waste-to-energy projects, decarbonization efforts, development of electricity transmission, geothermal energy, and green ammonia projects.

Airlangga highlighted that Indonesia currently operates 38 nickel smelters, with an investment value of US$15.8 billion (Rp253.6 trillion). These smelters contributed around US$25 billion to exports in 2023.
